Sea changers face costly surprise – especially as Australia may not have been able to take steps in that direction itself – to avoid conflict, said Professor Matthew Ketterer of the University of Queensland’s department of marine science, a leading expert on the topic.
“The last few years have been extraordinarily busy, there are huge uncertainties – there are things we don’t know we can’t predict – and people have taken on more responsibilities with the environment and those have all raised issues about whether that’s good or bad,” he told a seminar hosted by the Australian Conservation Foundation.
The study concluded that, after “a comprehensive evaluation of the Australian environment and natural resource management practices over the past 40 years”, the risks to Australia’s ecosystems were so great they were better addressed through the introduction of conservation measures rather than the “war of attrition against the natural environment.”
“One of the things we know about the natural world is that nature has its own logic, it’s part of the natural world itself, it works in ways we can’t anticipate,” Professor Ketterer said.
“The problem comes 포항출장마사지when the world has these huge uncertainty about what the world wants and how the world should behave. This creates a potential conflict with human ingenuity.
“If you’ve got a small ecosystem that is exposed to those uncertainties, then you’ve got to get ready to fight a war of attrition and if you cannot defend the system, you are going to have conflict.”
Professor Ketterer also said Australia’s natural environment was not “uneasily susceptible to catastrophic conflict” but “is in need of conservation interventions, that will keep the system from tipping over.”
